If you think health insurance is costly, then you should definitely have a look at the cost of healthcare services in the country. Compare the expenses on both and you will realize that paying regular premiums is much better than going medically bankrupt after paying hefty bills.
Health insurance is costly no doubt, but since it is compulsory to own one, a wiser idea would be to look at ways that will bring down the cost of the premiums. Here is an overview on the few steps that will make the health insurance more affordable.
1. Going in for a health plan that has a high deductible usually has a much a lower premium. If you do not anticipate any major illness coming up, this combination will save you hundreds of dollars on health insurance.
2. Quote comparison is the ideal way to get the cheapest health plans. Compare the prices, the coverage, benefits and the emergency provisions to get a medical policy that offers the maximum coverage at the lowest possible price.
3. Managed healthcare plans like HMOs, PPOs and PoS provide primary, preventive and affordable healthcare services.
4. Going in for a new health plan is less expensive than continuing with the existing one as new premium rates are cheaper than renewal rates.
5. Calculate all the combinations that are possible. Find out what is the cheapest, a health family plan for the entire family or one child being on one parent’s plan and the other getting covered by the other parent – check out all the permutations to find out the cheapest option.
6. Though accessing group insurance at work is usually cheap, it is always better to do a market survey to ensure that this particular health plan is the least expensive.
Health insurance is expensive but there are always cheaper alternatives available. Citizens just need to do their market research carefully to get the most affordable health plans.

Compare quotes to purchase affordable health plans
The most important thing to know before one purchases a health plan is that each plan is as different from the other as it could be. The prices differ, so does the coverage, the doctors and the benefits that come with the package. Therefore it will be foolish to assume that all medical policies are similar. There are dissimilarities in costs and expenses and there are various factors that lead to these differences.
There are various parameters that decide the cost of the premiums. The type of health plan, the age of the applicant, medical conditions, lifestyle, smoking status, etc. all decide the amount that one has to pay to get coverage. These are the factors that differentiate one health policy to another.
Quote comparison ensures that a resident does not end up paying more for a health plan when there is a cheaper version is available. There are two ways to compare prices. The traditional way is to go to the local bureau of the each insurance company and get the prices of each policy separately. One could also an insurance agent who will have information about the health plans and discounts. He would also be able to advise the residents on the type of the plan he should apply for.
The other method is find quotes online. Here too, one can log in to the website of an insurance company or to an independent health insurance online. An independent portal will give wider options of health plans and a more comprehensive coverage. Online comparison is also faster and the plans are laid side by side for easy comparison.
Manual or through the internet, comparing quotes is essential if one wants to get the cheapest medical policy. Quote comparison is like window shopping. It helps the residents to test the waters and have an overview about the health insurance sector in the USA.

Compare quotes to get the cheapest health plans
Accessing low cost and cheap medical insurance is like a dream come true for most Americans. In a country where health insurance is costly and healthcare services even costlier, owning a medical policy that does not hurt the pocket is not very common.
Quote comparison is the best way to purchase cheap medical insurance. In a competitive insurance market as that of US, prices on the same type of plan could differ by about 50% from company to company. Comparing quotes helps residents identify the cheapest options available in the type of coverage they are looking for.
There are two ways to compare health insurance quotes. The first is to find out the prices of each company separately and then compare them on your own. This could be a tedious process and it restricts the residents to only those plans whose prices they have asked for. Manually comparing quotes is gradually becoming outdated and citizens are now using the internet to compare health plans.
Even on the internet, a resident can access quotes from two places. He could log into the web portal of any health carrier and get the quotes. The alternate way is to log onto an independent insurance portal. An independent portal gives more option and a more comprehensive comparison. Residents should remember that it is not just the prices alone that they should compare but other factors should be taken into consideration as well like the insurance company, the benefits offered, the network of healthcare service providers, the emergency provisions, etc.
Quote comparison is a must if a resident wants to purchase the most affordable plan. However he should not get carried away alone and should give equal importance to other factors as well.

US sues BlueCross in Michigan
Blue Cross is in a soup in Michigan. The US Justice Department and Michigan’s attorney general have filed an antitrust lawsuit against the state’s largest insurance company that has on roll about 4.1 million Michigan residents. The government has alleged that the insurance company negotiated contracts with hospitals that prohibited them from giving more discounts to other insurers. According to other allegations, the contracts’ also required hospitals to charge other insurers significantly more than they charged Blue Cross. In other cases, Blue Cross agreed to increase the prices it pays hospitals - boosting costs for its own customers - in return for commitments that other insurers would be charged no less, the federal lawsuit said.
These contracts have forced the residents in Michigan to pay more for their healthcare services, no matter who their insurance carrier is.
The U.S. Justice Department and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox allege Blue Cross has been wielding its influence with more than half of the state's hospitals since 2007, when it started offering most-favored nation clauses, which gives preferential treatment to certain hospitals. They are seeking an injunction.
The hospitals include Beaumont Hospitals, St. John Providence Health System and Botsford Hospital. Nearly 70 Michigan hospitals have cooperated in the investigation.
Blue Cross has countered the allegations saying that the lawsuit was without merit. Andrew Hetzel, Blue Cross vice president for corporate communications, in response to the lawsuit has said, “At a time when the focus on health insurance affordability has never been more intense, it seems strange and ironic that the federal government would be suing a health plan that has worked very hard to negotiate the lowest prices for its customers with hospitals.”
The US justice department has already won five such cases since 1994 in Ohio, Rhode Island, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and Arizona.
